North American indigenous peoples have cultures spanning thousands of years.

Some of their oral traditions accurately describe historical events, such as the Cascadia earthquake of 1700 and the 18th century Tseax Cone eruption.

On June 11, 2008, the Prime Minister, on behalf of the Government of Canada, delivered a formal apology in the House of Commons to former students, their families, and communities for Canada's role in the operation of the residential schools.

With the support of the Assembly of First Nations and Inuit organizations, former residential school students took the federal government and the churches to court.

Residential schools for Aboriginal people in Canada date back to the 1870s.

While there is an estimated 80,000 former students living today, the ongoing impact of residential schools has been felt throughout generations and has contributed to social problems that continue to exist.

Although not without conflict or slavery, Euro-Canadians' early interactions with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit populations were less combative compared to the often violent battles between colonists and native peoples in the United States.

Combined with later economic development, this relatively non-combative history has allowed First Nations peoples to have an influence on Canadian national culture, while preserving their own identities.

Those in the Arctic area are distinct and known as Inuit.

The Métis, another distinct ethnicity, developed after European contact and relations primarily between First Nations people and Europeans.
